The theatre industry in Singapore has been hard hit by COVID-19. Still, the performers and creatives soldiered on, as live performances slowly made their resurgence. In 2021, Wild Rice’s The Amazing Celestial Race was the first musical to open in Singapore since the pandemic. This year they are bring it back with a bang. But Safe Management Measures limited the number of cast and crew, key personnel stuck overseas due to VTL suspensions and oft-changing COVID-19 regulations, staging a play is more complex than ever. As opening day looms, Singapore’s daily Omicron cases continue to creep up, and the threat of COVID restrictions hangs over the production.
